Monmouth Park

Located on the Jersey Shore, Monmouth Park conducts live racing from May until early October. The historic track first opened in 1870, but legislation that prohibited pari-mutuel wagering forced its closure in 1894.

After a 53-hiatus, racing was back on the Jersey Shore when legislators made horse betting legal, and the track reopened in 1946.

The marquee event of the meeting is the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, which is restricted to three-year-olds and regularly attracts horses that traveled down the Triple Crown trail.

Both Big Brown (2008) and War Emblem (2002) pulled off the Kentucky Derby-Haskell double.

Hall of fame trainer Bob Baffert has saddled six Haskell winners including three in a row. Baffert won with Lookin At Lucky in 2010, Coil in 2011, and Paynter in 2012.

Two fillies have won the race. Rachel Alexandra beat the boys in 2009 for trainer Steve Asmussen and Serena’s Song won the 1995 running for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

Jockey Chris Antley holds the record for most wins at a single meeting, booting home 171 winners in 1984. Joe Bravo leads all jockeys in titles with 13 including six in a row from 1991 to 1996.

Elvis Trujillo led all jockeys in wins at the 2012 meeting with 110 winners from 468 starters.

John Tammaro III (1974) and J. Willard Thompson (1975) are tied for most wins by a trainer at a single meeting with 55 winners.

Jane Cibelli was the leading trainer at the 2012 with 30 winners from her 130 starters. The runner up at the meeting was Juan Serey with 26 winners. Serey holds the record for most consecutive trainer titles with five, dominating from 1995 to 1999.
