Belmont Park

Belmont Park is located in Elmont, New York and has two meetings each year, a spring/summer meeting that runs from May through July and a fall meeting that runs from September through October.

Opened in 1905, it is best known for hosting the third jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, which is run on the first Saturday of June each year.

Eleven horses have won the Triple Crown, which consists of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The last horse to sweep the series was Affirmed in 1978.

One of the most well-known Belmont Stakes was the 1973 running where Secretariat rolled to a record 31-length win on his way to Triple Crown glory.

Julie Krone became the first women rider to win a Triple Crown race when she won the Belmont Stakes in 1993 aboard Colonial Affair.

Only three fillies have beaten the boys in the Belmont: Rags to Riches (2007), Tanya (1905) and Ruthless (1867).

The fall championship meeting at Belmont Park features 21 graded stakes, nine of which are Grade 1 races that are used as final preps for the Breeders’ Cup.

Trainers Chad Brown and David Jacobson tied for the trainer's title at the 2012 fall meeting with 21 winners apiece.

Rick Dutrow was the leading trainer at the 2012 spring meeting with 27 winners. Second was Christophe Clement with 22 trips to the winner’s circle.

Ramon Dominguez dominated the jockey standings with 56 winners from his 224 mounts. Second in the standings was Javier Castellano with 39 winners. Dominguez won the spring title with 70 winners while Castellano was second with 60 victories.
