Expect Orb to head to the Preakness as a huge favorite, after rallying in messy conditions to win the 139th Kentucky Derby Saturday.
The second betting choice had a perfect trip and turned it on late to easily win.
“His Beyer Speed Figure of 104 was a career best and stacks up well with recent winners of the Derby,” said Michael Dempsey of TurfnSport.com. “I’ll Have Another earned a 101 last year, and Animal Kingdom, the 2011 winner posted a 103.”
And while some of the top challengers are expected to line up again in the Preakness Stakes, the rest of the field will be comprised of new challengers, none of whom seem to have the credentials to knock off Orb.
“Four or five runners he beat are coming back to take him on again in the Preakness and the four or five new shooters but they do not look very imposing,” said Dempsey. “Orb is going to be a heavy betting favorite to win the Preakness and head to New York for a shot at the Triple Crown.”
