2014 Kentucky Derby Field, Betting Odds

Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner California Chrome will be the headliner for the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) on Saturday, May 3, which will draw a full field of 20, making it the best betting race of the year.

California Chrome, who is perfect in three starts this year, is currently listed as the 7-4 betting choice at Bovada.  In addition to his win in the Santa Anita Derby, the Art Sherman trainee won the California Cup Derby and the San Felipe Stakes (G2).  The colt was the leader in the 2014 Kentucky Derby Points Standings with 150.

Vicar’s in Trouble finished second in the 2014 Kentucky Derby Points Standings with 120, winning the Louisiana Derby (G2) in his last outing on March 29. The colt is currently listed at 10-1 in Derby betting at Bovada.

The co-second choices in the early betting are Wicked Strong and Danza, each at wagering odds of 8-1.

Wicked Strong burst on the Derby scene with an upset victory in the Wood Memorial (G1) at Aqueduct on April 5, while Danza pulled off one of the biggest upsets on the Derby Trail this year with his win in the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park. The Todd Pletcher trainee returned his backers $84.60 for a $2 wager.

The Bob Baffert trained Hoppertunity is currently listed at betting odds of 14-1 at Bovada. Baffert has won the Run for the Roses three times, the last with War Emblem in 2002.

Hoppertunity won the Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park on March 15, but was no match for California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby, running second and beaten 5 ¼ lengths.
