2014 Kentucky Derby Field and Morning Line Odds

A field of 20 three-year-olds will line up on Saturday at Churchill Downs in the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby, with California Chrome installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite.

A winner of four straight including the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 5, the colt finished on top of the 2014 Kentucky Derby Points Standings with 150. For horse bettors looking to lock in a price or get wagers in early, Bovada currently has the colt listed at betting odds of 11-4.

Trained by Art Sherman and ridden by Victor Espinoza, the colt has won six of his 10 career starts for earnings of $1,134,850. He owns the top last out Beyer Speed Figures over the past two races and drew an ideal post for Saturday’s race.

Hoppertunity, who was beaten 5 ¼ lengths by the Derby favorite in his last start drew the 11 post and is the second choice on the morning line at 6-1. The current price at Bovada is a bit more generous at 8-1.

The colt is trained by Bob Baffert, who has won the Kentucky Derby three times-Silver Charm in 1997, Real Quiet in 1998 and War Emblem in 2002. Baffert saddled Bodemeister to a runner up finish in 2012.

Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith gets the call on the son of Any Given Saturday, who won the Rebel (G2) at Oaklawn Park before running second to the Derby favorite in his last start. The colt breaks from the 11 post.

Wood Memorial (G1) winner Wicked Strong is the third choice on the official morning line at 8-1 despite drawing the 20 post. The colt is listed at odds of 10-1 at Bovada.

Arkansas Derby (G1) victory Danza is the fourth choice on the morning line at 10-1 and will break from the four post. The colt was the upset winner of the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park in his last outing at betting odds of 41-1. Joe Bravo will ride for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Post time for the Run for the Roses is set for 6:24pm (ET) and will be broadcast live on NBC. The 13-race card at Churchill Downs gets underway at 10:30am (ET).
